Skin conditions

Among the most common forms of psychosomatic illness are a variety of skin problems. The skin, the largest organ in the human body, has long been recognised to be very responsive to mental states, particularly distressing mental states. It is in the cases of skin problems where psychosomatic factors are perceived from experience to play a substantial part in the illness, that hypnosis is found to be most effective.

Eczema

Hypnosis has been used to help many individuals to achieve varying degrees of relief from eczema (atopic dermatitis). The mechanisms by which hypnosis produces its beneficial effects are unknown, as are the causes of eczema, but the beneficial effects of hypnosis may be linked with an improvement in immune function. Hypnotism can often help greatly with itchiness and other uncomfortable symptoms of the problem. Hypnotherapists sometimes work with asthma (and / or hay-fever) and eczema together in an individual as they may accompany each other.

Dermatitis

Hypnosis has been used for a long time to treat various forms of dermatitis. It is in the cases where psychological stress plays a major role in the problem that hypnosis has its most immediate and powerful beneficial effects. As irritants, allergies, genetic factors and various health problems in addition to psychological stress can lead to dermatitis it is important that all possible remedies are considered by the client in consultation with their physician in addition to the use of hypnosis to help the problem. By stimulating the body's healing mechanisms, hypnosis may work on several levels to help alleviate the problem.

Psoriasis

Hypnosis may be used to help with psoriasis in various ways. Hypnotic programming can help the sufferer cope better with the symptoms of dry, itchy, painful areas. There is no medical cure for this chronic condition although medical treatments may produce substantial relief. Symptoms may lessen only to reappear again, therefore, intensive hypnotic programming, including suggestions given during self-hypnosis are important in helping to combat the persistent nature of the problem. Suggestions of many kinds for improving the condition of the skin may be given and can be used as an adjunct to medical treatments.
